Pei Modern – Melbourne Restaurant

Pei Modern is a goregous little restaurant located at Collins Place, 45 Collins Street Melbourne. It’s a bit dark and intimate, but friendly at the same time. Just this week they (deservedly) won the Good Food Guide 2013 award for Best New Restaurant, but I was lucky enough to beat the rush and eat there last week.
My fiance Daisy and I were there with another couple who also have children, so we decided to order the pork nuggets with a side of chips just so we could tell the kids that we ate nuggets and chips for dinner. That’s right, I said PORK nuggets. Now I love pork, but I was a bit suspicious of the idea of them being in nugget form. They turned out to be the highlight of the night, and it was only the promise of how good their mains are that kept us from gorging ourselves on them.
For my main I had rabbit risotto with radicchio. It was a surprisingly sweet dish, but it worked really well with the rabbit and was certainly s generous portion. I loved the simplicity of their display and was really happy until food envy struck and our Daisy’s slow roasted lamb shoulder arrived.
Look at that. I’m betting at least one of you also felt a pang of food envy just seeing the photo.
The staff were quick and friendly despite the place being quite full on a Friday night. The menu is a bit pricey but the food and service are definitely worth the premium. Congratulations on their win and I can’t wait to go again.
