What’s on in Melbourne 13 Feb – 19 Feb

Camera Roll-3024

Hello Melbourne! Hope you’re all having a great week. Melbourne Summer is really ramping up in it’s last few weeks, and luckily there’s a whole bunch of outdoorsy type activities for us all to revel in! As a reminder, I can never fit in EVERYTHING into this weekly post, but I do have the events calendar up above if you’re ever short on things to do.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra – free performances

Over the next few days the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is hosting free performances at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl from 7pm. Tonight’s performance is:

  • East Side Story
  • Wednesday 13 February
  • Dvořák Czech Suite  Bartók Piano Concerto No.3  Tchaikovsky Symphony No.4
  • Ainars Rubikis conductor  Alexey Yemtsov piano

It’s first come first serve, with further performances listed here

Southgate Cinema – Free Movies

Tonight Southgate Cinema will be screening Amelie for free from 9pm. Very much first come first served, with more screenings on every Tuesday and Wednesday until 27 March. More details here.

Valentines Day – Bent Cabaret

If you’re looking for something a bit dark for your V-Day celebrations, this just might be your thing. One of my favourite bars, the LuWow Bar, will be hosting a cabaret night with The Bad Ladies, tickets available here.

Square Sounds Melbourne

From their site:

Two nights of international stars of the chip music and related scenes, many of whom have never been seen before in Australia, is brought to you by the team behind SoundBytes, Australia’s longest running live chipmusic event series and also the Australian faces behind 2012′s Blip Festival Australia. Handpicking some of Australia and the world’s best chiptune, micropop, skweee dreamsynth and experimental electronica, they have brought together a line-up full of retro soundscapes and 8bit visuals that will be an audio visual feast for the senses made to get your feet moving and your head bobbing.

In other words, the kind of music that I like but makes my fiance regret certain life decisions will be on display at the Evelyn Hotel, details here.

Farewell to Summer

Docklands is hosting a free event this weekend as a goodbye to our lovely, but overly hot, summer. This will include sand sculptures, face painting and other kid friendly activities. More details here.

7 Cent Brewery is Go!

From their site:

Be among the first people to taste the inaugural official release from 7 Cent Brewery.

Doug, Matthew and Brendan will be bringing kegs of their ESB – Extra Special Bitter – Wapping Wharf to Penny Blue to formally announce themselves to the world.

I prefer a pale all myself, but if Bitter’s your thing here’s a chance to try out a whole new one while supporting some locals. More info here.

Look Stop Swap!

Part of the Sustainable Living Festival, this is a collection of installations, classes and events for sustainable living. I’m looking forward to learning how to make a drinking glass from a bottle! Details here.

Transitions Film Festival

Continuing Melbourne’s almost unbroken run of Film Festivals each weekend, this weekend ACMI will host the Transitions Film Festival, highlighting films that are “positive, solutions-focused and inspirational”. Full Program here.
