Che Olivier is a little French restaurant located at 121 Greville Street, Prahran. They recently won “Best French restaurant in Victoria” through the I love food awards in 2012, and I have to say this is well deserved. In the interests of full disclosure, I have to admit this is where Daisy and I had our first date, and as a result this restaurant has a special little place in both our hearts.
One of the things I love most about Chez Olivier is how welcoming it is, especially the little bar near the entrance. There’s lots of other authentic little touches along the way, including the posters on the wall, little tin trucks and about a thousand bottles of wine in every nook and cranny.
I should also mention the wait staff. They are very French, and are part of the decore themselves. They’re especially handy when you’re as ignorant about wine choices as I am about what matches which on the menu.
I’m not forgetting the food, there’s just so much other good stuff before it arrives. Our entrée was the mandatory charcuterie, and it is perfect. This picture is of their entrée size, although a larger main size is available for sharing. The pickles were quickly gone, and I though the inclusion of Ox Tongue (bottom left) was unusual, but it mixed in well.
My main was “Cuisse de canard confite”, a duck leg confit with cider and calvados sauce on chestnuts and crystallised ginger. Be warned, it’s a little sweet, so prepare your taste buds accordingly!
Daisy had Steak Frites, 200g of grain fed aged scotch fillet w/ pommes frites and mustard butter. That lump of butter on top melts as you eat, providing a lovely little self sauce. It goes fantastic with a little red wine.
Chez Olivier is definitely worth the trip out. They have had degustation nights in the past, with 8 or 9 smaller courses spread over the course of one night while they experiment with new tastes. Those especially are a fantastic night out, and sign up to their newsletter to hear about the next one.
